Pricing
How much does a wedding photographer cost in California?
+
Range is wide. Budget: $800-1,500. Mid: $2-3.5K. Experienced: $4-6.5K. Luxury: $8-16K+. Average CA couple pays $4,200. See /compare for what each tier actually gets you.
Coverage
How many hours of coverage do I need?
+
Most weddings: 8-10 hours. Short traditional weddings or backyard: 6 hours. Multi-day / destination: 10-14 hours spread across days. Less than 6 = you will miss moments. Run /tools/start-time for your exact answer.
Booking
When should I book my wedding photographer?
+
9-12 months out for peak-season dates (May-Oct). 6 months for off-season. Good photographers book 12+ months out. If your date is less than 90 days away, see /offer/1000-off-last-minute.
Delivery
How long do wedding photos take to deliver?
+
Sneak peek: 48h (AGV) to 2 weeks (others). Full gallery: 4-8 weeks (AGV: 6-8). Highlight film: 8-12 weeks. Anyone promising full gallery in under 4 weeks is cutting corners somewhere.
Delivery
How many photos do I get from my wedding?
+
300-600 for 8-hour coverage. 600-1,000 for full-day. AGV delivers no cap on edited photos — you get every keeper. Anyone offering fixed count (e.g., "50 photos") is holding your photos hostage for upsell.
Legal
Who owns my wedding photos?
+
I retain copyright. You get full print release + usage rights for personal use and social media. You can print anywhere, post anywhere, share anywhere. I retain the right to use photos in my portfolio + marketing (with your optional privacy opt-out).
Planning
What is a first look and should I do one?
+
Private moment where you see each other before the ceremony. 80% of couples who do one say they'd do it again. Gives you 90 extra minutes of couple + bridal party portraits. Doesn't replace the aisle moment — just adds an intimate one. See /tools/first-look-guide.
Planning
Do you have a backup photographer?
+
Yes. AGV has an A-list associate bench. If I get sick / emergency, I activate a bench member at no cost to you. If no bench available, I cover equivalent photographer + partial refund. This is written into every contract.
Planning
What happens if it rains on my wedding day?
+
We shoot regardless. Rain photos are often the best (dramatic, moody, unique). I bring clear umbrellas. Every AGV wedding has a rain contingency plan signed off 14 days out with venue + coordinator. Weather doesn't cancel, it shapes.
Travel
Do you travel for destination weddings?
+
Yes. In-state travel always included. Out-of-state or international: flights + hotel + car at cost, no markup. See /brides/destination-wedding-california for regions + pricing.
Packages
Do I need both photo AND video?
+
Not legally. Practically: photo captures moments, video captures motion + sound. Photo is what you frame. Video is what you play at anniversaries + funerals. 85% of AGV couples book both. Budget forces the choice: photo first, video second.
Packages
What is a highlight film vs full-length film?
+
Highlight: 3-7 min cinematic trailer with music. Full-length: 20-45 min documentary-style, includes vows + speeches + parent dances. AGV standard is highlight + vows + speeches separately. Full-length is premium add-on.
Packages
Can I get the raw / unedited files?
+
Standard: no. Raw files aren't meant for viewing — they look dull/flat without editing. AGV offers edited raw add-on ($1,500) for couples who want archival access to every frame.
Style
What's the difference between photojournalist / documentary / editorial / cinematic?
+
Documentary: real moments, zero posing. Editorial: magazine-style posing + direction. Cinematic: film-like mood, dramatic color grading. Photojournalist: candid + reportage. Most good photographers blend. Run /quiz/your-photographer-style for your match.
Planning
Should I do family formals before or after the ceremony?
+
Before, if you're doing a first look. After, if traditional. Pre-ceremony formals take 20% longer because family is still arriving. Post-ceremony is tighter but cuts into cocktail hour. AGV builds this into your timeline.
Vetting
How do I know if a photographer is legit?
+
Signs of legit: insurance certificate ready on request, contract with backup clause, portfolio from last 12 months (not 5 years ago), verifiable Google reviews, LLC/business license, pays taxes. If they can't produce these, walk.
Legal
What if my photographer cancels on me?
+
AGV's contract: if I cancel for any reason, I cover equivalent photographer + 50% refund. Most photographer contracts have no backup clause — read every contract carefully for this.
Day-of
Can my mom walk around with her phone filming during portraits?
+
I'll ask her not to. Phone-waving during professional shoots = distracted subjects + iPhone lens flare in your paid photos. Your mom can record at the reception all she wants. Portraits = pros only.
Planning
Should I give my photographer a shot list?
+
Short one with specific family groupings (names + who stands where). Not a Pinterest board — I know how to shoot a wedding. Pinterest ≠ shot list. Trust the photographer for the creative + give me your family names.
Day-of
Do I feed my photographer?
+
Yes. Industry standard is vendor meal same as guests. I shoot 10 hours. I need fuel. It's usually in your catering contract at $30-50/vendor. Skipping this = hangry photographer = worse photos.
Packages
Can we add a second photographer?
+
Yes. Second photographer captures angles you'd miss (groom getting ready while bride is getting ready, reception + couple portraits simultaneously). AGV 2nd shooter add-on: $750.
Style
What if I'm not photogenic?
+
Nobody is, until they're directed well. AGV does an engagement session specifically so you practice being photographed. By the wedding day, you won't think about the camera.
Delivery
Can we get professionally printed photos?
+
AGV's print shop at /shop offers museum-quality prints, albums, and wall art through WHCC (pro lab). Or use your own lab with the print release — we won't lock you in.
Planning
When does the photography start on wedding day?
+
2-4 hours before ceremony typically. Exact time depends on ceremony type + bridal party size + first look. Run /tools/start-time for your number.
Packages
What's included in an engagement session?
+
2-hour shoot at location of your choice + 100+ edited photos. AGV standard or free with full-day wedding coverage bookings this month (see /offer/free-engagement-session).
Packages
How do I choose a wedding photography package?
+
Work backward from what you'll display + share. Walls: need prints. Book: need album. Socials: need highlight film. Memory: need gallery. Pick coverage based on what actually leaves your hard drive.
Delivery
What's a preserve-the-moments / locked gallery?
+
Gallery access lives 1-2 years with AGV (lifetime with Heirloom tier). Download full res + back up to 2+ clouds + 2+ drives. Don't rely on the photographer's server forever.
Values
Do you do LGBTQ+ weddings?
+
Yes. Every couple gets the same care, same packages, same pricing. AGV does not charge different rates or ask 'who's the bride' because there's no default assumption.
Values
Do you photograph religious / cultural ceremonies?
+
Yes — Catholic, Hindu, Sikh, Jewish, Muslim, Mexican / Latinx traditional, Indigenous ceremonies. I brief with officiant + family elders before the day to respect customs + not interrupt sacred moments.
Vetting
Is there anything I shouldn't ask my wedding photographer?
+
Honestly? Nothing. If a photographer dodges questions about insurance, contract, backup, or pricing — walk away. Good photographers answer everything because there's nothing to hide.
