Pacifica Coast Elopement

A Pacifica elopement,
cliffs, no permit.

Six free public spots, the September secret, the courthouse-then-Pacifica power-move. The closest cliff-elopement to San Francisco — 30 minutes south, no overnight needed.

Pacifica is the most underrated elopement spot in the Bay Area. Free public trails. Pacific cliffs. No permit needed for couple-only ceremonies. 30-minute drive from SF.

It is also unpretentious — surf-town, taco-truck-on-the-beach vibe. If you want a Big Sur gallery without the 3-hour drive or the $200 permit, this is your spot.

September. Devil's Slide. Skip the fog months.

The fog calendar

When fog will ruin your sunset.

May–August

Marine-layer fog peaks. Mornings socked-in until noon. Afternoons clear by 2 PM, then fog returns by 7 PM. Sunset is unreliable — book inland or skip these months.

September–October

Indian summer. Best months. Clear skies, warm Pacific water (65°F), no fog. Top recommendation.

November–April

Clear-sky season. 50–65°F days. Storm windows possible (rain + wind). Sunset reliable.

FAQ

Most-asked questions.

Why Pacifica vs Half Moon Bay?+
Pacifica is closer to SF (30 min vs 45 min for HMB). It is more rugged, less developed, surf-town vibe. HMB is more polished, more upscale resorts (Ritz-Carlton). For a free public-trail elopement under 90 minutes, Pacifica wins. For a Ritz reception, HMB wins.
Do we need any permits?+
For couple-only elopements (no chairs, no arch, no officiant arch) at Devil's Slide / Mori Point / Pacifica Pier / Rockaway / Sweeney Ridge — NO permit required. These are all GGNRA / public-trail / public-beach lands. Pacifica State Beach (Linda Mar) has a $200 county permit if you bring chairs/arch. AGV files this when needed.
Best month for Pacifica?+
September. Indian summer, clear sunset, warm Pacific water. October second-best. April is good for wildflower bluffs at Mori Point. Skip May–August unless you book ceremonies for noon (skipping the fog clear-out at 4–6 PM).
How long should the elopement be?+
Under-90-minute Pacifica elopements work great. Couple + officiant + 2 witnesses + photographer. Trailhead parking → walk to overlook → 15-min ceremony → 30-min couple portraits → walk back. Pair with lunch at Taco Bell on the Beach (real, iconic Pacifica spot) or at Moonraker for a nicer celebration.
Can our dog come?+
On-leash on all public trails (Devil's Slide, Mori Point, Sweeney Ridge). Off-leash at Pacifica State Beach in designated areas. No leash required at the pier. Bring water + a wrap (windy).
Where do guests stay?+
Pacifica is mostly day-trip from SF (30 min). For overnight: Lighthouse Hotel ($200–350, oceanfront), Holiday Inn Express ($150–250), nearby Half Moon Bay options 15 min south, or Cliff House SF for nicer 30-min-drive option.
How much does a Pacifica elopement photographer cost?+
AGV starts at $1,500 for 90-minute Pacifica elopement coverage (couple-only, 25+ edited images). Most couples book 2–3 hours ($1,800–2,500) which adds golden-hour portraits + a Sweeney Ridge ridgeline run. Same-day micro-packages from $1,200.
What about a courthouse + Pacifica combo?+
Strong move. SF City Hall ceremony at 10 AM (Tuesday-Thursday), then 30-min drive to Pacifica for golden-hour cliff portraits. Same-day, no overnight, full editorial gallery. AGV does this combo regularly — quote $2,500 for full coverage.
