Mendocino Coast Wedding Photography

A Mendocino wedding,
the underrated coast.

Six venues, 1909 lighthouses, Victorian-village backdrops, and the wine country 30 minutes inland. 3.5 hours from SF. The most beautiful coast in California that nobody talks about.

Mendocino is what Big Sur was 40 years ago. Same Pacific drama, same redwood inland, same cinematic light — minus the tour buses and Instagram-influencer crowds. Victorian fishing village + lighthouse + cliff-top inn + winery 30 minutes inland.

It is also a 3.5-hour drive. That is the trade. The couples who make it leave with a gallery nobody else has.

September. October. Or shoot a winter storm wedding for unmatched drama.

FAQ

Most-asked questions.

How far is Mendocino from SF?+
About 3.5 hours via Highway 101 → Hwy 128 → Hwy 1. Anderson Valley is the scenic route (vineyards). Hwy 1 is the slow route (gorgeous coast). Plan a Friday-Saturday-Sunday wedding minimum so guests are not exhausted from the drive.
Is Mendocino worth the drive vs Big Sur?+
Different gallery. Big Sur = dramatic cliffs, redwoods, Bixby Bridge. Mendocino = Victorian villages, lighthouses, Pacific cliffs, more "New England by the Sea" feel. Mendocino is quieter, less photographed, and 30% cheaper at most venues. If you want a wedding nobody else has done, Mendocino is the move.
Where do guests fly into?+
Most fly into SFO (3.5-hr drive after) or OAK (3-hr drive). Smaller option: Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport (STS) in Santa Rosa, then 2-hr drive. Some couples charter buses from Healdsburg or Sonoma for guests staying south.
Where do we actually stay?+
On-property if you book Heritage House, Glendeven, Stanford Inn — all have rooms ($300–800/night). MacCallum House Inn ($300–500, charming Victorian). Brewery Gulch Inn ($400–700, ocean view rooms). Plenty of vacation-rental homes ($400–1,200/night in Mendocino Village + Little River).
What about storms in winter?+
Real but the photo opportunity is unmatched. Crashing waves + dark skies + fog + couple in the rain = the most cinematic Mendocino frames you can produce. Heritage House and Stanford Inn have indoor ceremony backups. Have a real plan with your venue 14 days out — Highway 1 has closed multiple times in past winters.
How much does a Mendocino wedding photographer cost?+
AGV starts at $5,000 for 8-hour Mendocino coverage including travel + 1 night lodging from the Bay Area. Most couples book 10 hours ($6,000–7,500). Multi-day weekends $7,500–10,000. Travel + lodging is at-cost included; no markup.
Can our dog come?+
Mendocino is dog country. Heritage House, Glendeven, Stanford Inn = dog-friendly. Point Cabrillo bluff = on-leash. Russian Gulch trails = on-leash. Bring water + a wrap (ocean wind).
What about Anderson Valley wineries for the rehearsal dinner?+
Strong recommendation. Anderson Valley (Hwy 128, 30 min inland) is the most underrated wine region in California. Boonville + Philo are quiet-luxe with Pinot Noir + Chardonnay. Pennyroyal Farm + Husch + Goldeneye = top picks for rehearsal dinners. Quirky, beautiful, no Napa pretension.
