Marin County Wedding Photography

A Marin wedding,
redwoods to coast.

Six venues, the redwood permit logic, the Mt Tam summit, and the fog rules that decide your sunset. 30 minutes from SF, feels like a different world.

Marin is the closest "destination wedding" feeling to San Francisco. 300-ft redwoods. Pacific cliffs. Mt Tam summit at 2,500 ft. The Golden Gate Bridge from every angle. All within 45 minutes of the Embarcadero.

It is also fog territory. May through August your sunset disappears at 4 PM. Pick the right month and your gallery looks like Big Sur with a fraction of the drive.

September. October. Or shoot above 1,500 ft to beat the fog.

FAQ

Most-asked questions.

Do we need a permit at Muir Woods?+
Yes. NPS wedding permit, $150 file fee. Max 35 guests. You also need a parking reservation (gomuirwoods.com, $9). Ceremonies are limited to 8 AM (before opening) or after 5 PM (after closing). Cathedral Grove is the standard ceremony spot.
Stinson Beach without a permit — possible?+
For couple-only elopements with no chairs/arch — yes. Add any setup and you need a Stinson Beach (NPS) permit, $200, file 30 days out. Local couples often do quick courthouse + 30-min Stinson portrait sessions and that is permit-free.
How does Mt Tam West Peak work?+
State Park permit ($300, max 50 ppl), file 30 days out. Drive up Panoramic Highway → East Peak parking. Walk 200 yards to West Peak fire-lookout area. Cement pad, low-railing, 360° views. Best at golden hour.
Do we need a shuttle for guests?+
For Cavallo Point + Mountain Home Inn + Cypress Grove — yes, recommended. Highway 1 + Mt Tam Road are 2-lane and gridlock at sunset. Marin Charter Service is the local recommendation. For Stinson Beach + Muir Woods elopements with <20 guests, carpooling is fine.
What about the Marin Headlands?+
Free, public, gorgeous. Most popular elopement spots: Battery Spencer (the iconic GG Bridge frame), Hawk Hill (highest viewpoint), Point Bonita Lighthouse. No permit for couple-only ceremonies. NPS permit ($200) for ceremonies with chairs/arch. Best at golden hour, foggy in summer mornings.
Where do guests stay?+
Cavallo Point ($600–1,400, on-property if you book Cavallo). Inn Above Tide ($350–600, Sausalito waterfront). Mill Valley Inn ($300–500). Olema House ($350–600, near Pt Reyes). Tomales Bay Lodging ($250–500). Plenty of Airbnb in Mill Valley + Sausalito.
Best month for Marin?+
September. 75°F, no fog, clear sunsets. October second-best — quiet crowds, golden hills. April + May are good (wildflowers) but variable weather. Skip mid-June through August unless you book a venue above 1,500 ft (Mt Tam) where the fog stops.
How much does a Marin wedding photographer cost?+
AGV starts at $3,500 for 6-hour Marin coverage (45-min travel from SF). Most couples book 8 hours ($4,500–5,500). Cavallo Point or full-day weekends $5,500–7,000. Elopements (Muir Woods, Stinson, Mt Tam) 4 hours from $2,200.
