Carmel-by-the-Sea Wedding Photography

A Carmel wedding,
storybook style.

The Mission, the Lodge, the Point. Six venues, the beach permit you need to know about, and the timing tricks that beat the fog. From 15+ Carmel weddings.

Carmel is the most architecturally rich square mile on the West Coast. The 1771 Mission. White-picket cottages out of a fairy tale. Cypress groves over Pacific cliffs. Clint Eastwood's ranch with sheep grazing the meadow.

It is also unforgiving on photography. Fog rolls in by 4 PM half the year. The Mission has strict rules. Pebble Beach courses are off-limits for portraits. Point Lobos closes at sunset.

Knowing the rules is the difference between a fairy-tale gallery and a frustrating day.

May–October. Mission first, beach last. Always have a fog backup.

FAQ

Most-asked questions.

Carmel Beach for ceremony — can I?+
Yes, with a permit. Carmel Beach is a city beach (free public access) but ceremonies with chairs / arches / officiant require a $250 permit from the city. Submit 30 days out via City of Carmel-by-the-Sea website. Couple-only elopements without setup do not require a permit.
How does the Carmel Mission process work?+
You contact the Mission directly (Father Paul handles weddings) 12+ months out. Standard fee is $1,500 + a parish donation. You do NOT need to be a parishioner but you do need to be Catholic (or one partner Catholic with dispensation). Pre-Cana counseling required — 6 sessions, can be done remotely.
Pebble Beach golf weather — what should I expect?+
May–October: warm-cool, often clear afternoons. November–April: fog, wind, occasional rain. Pebble has glass-walled ballrooms specifically for fog backup. May, June, September, October are the safest weather months.
Where do guests stay?+
L'Auberge Carmel ($800–1,400/night, walkable village), Hotel Adobe ($350–600, mid-budget), Cypress Inn (Doris Day's old hotel, $400–700, dog-friendly), Mission Ranch ($300–500, on-property if you book Mission Ranch venue), Pebble Beach Lodge ($1,200+/night, on-property if you book Pebble).
Point Lobos for an elopement — how does it work?+
State park permit, $200, file 30 days out. Limited to 8 people total. Sea Lion Point and Whaler's Cove are the two ceremony spots. Park opens at 8 AM, closes at sunset. Best months April–November (December–March can be wet and closed for storm damage).
What does a Carmel wedding photographer cost?+
AGV starts at $4,000 for 8-hour Carmel coverage including travel. Most couples book 8–10 hours ($4,500–$6,000). Pebble Beach + multi-day weddings ($6,000–$8,500). Point Lobos elopements (4 hours, $2,500).
Should we do an engagement session at Point Lobos?+
Yes. Best engagement-session location in California. Cypress + cliffs + sea lions + zero permit if you stay on the public trails. 90 minutes at golden hour gets you 75 portfolio-grade frames. Pair with a wine-and-cheese picnic at the Point.
